Goals Part I: 2018 Recap | Sweet Wally Photography | Nashville Newborn Photographer | Bowling Green Newborn Photographer

How in the world is it 2019?! It feels like yesterday I was planning what I hoped to accomplish in 2018 and then I blinked and now we’re here.

Last year, I created a blog post about my 2018 photography goals. This helped me keep them top of mind, so I want to revisit and do this again for the new year. Even though this kept them in my head, I still did’t go as far as I hoped in all of these areas. I accomplished one of the three…but with the disclaimer that the other two are currently in progress and to be completed by the end of this month. That’s good for a half point, right?!

My 2018 goals and the results…

  1. Find a mentor. Accomplished! I sought out Kristen Ryan, who is a landscape artist. I was so drawn to her edits and how she incorporates her children into her landscape images. Not only were Kristen’s critiques and words helpful, we’ve also managed to snag her as an instructor for the 2019 Insta-Inspire Photography Retreat!

  2. Apply to Click Pro. This is a time-consuming task, compiling a portfolio of 150 images. Though I didn’t submit in the 2018 calendar year, my portfolio has been compiled and I’m currently receiving critiques from trusted photographer friends on how to tweak it to completion. I am planning to submit by January 31st.

  3. Learn video. I did not actually take the workshop in 2018, but I did sign up so perhaps that’s another half point?! I am a few days into the Everyday Film School, and I am so excited to capture my kiddos in a new way. I can’t wait to have their little voices and sayings in video for keeps. And once I have a firm grasp on this new art form, I hope to offer this to my families as well.

So that’s the recap! One down, two on the way to being checked off by the month’s end. Time to look forward to what is on tap for the new year. Will be posting that soon!

Grateful to be here and be sharing this art with so many of you.

Photography Goals for 2018 | Sweet Wally Photography | Nashville Photographer | Bowling Green KY Photographer

Are you a list person? Like do you enjoy writing things down and checking them off? I totally am. I will even write something down I've already accomplished just to have the satisfaction of crossing through it. Tell me I'm not alone? Or just politely nod and keep scrolling...

I'm also a big goals person and no better time to write down those goals than in the new year! Actually, I'm a fan of writing down goals just because it's a Monday, so you can imagine the excitement that the turn of a calendar brings me.

And if there is one way to hold you accountable with goals, it's to place them on a public forum. For your business. Where people find out more about you. Nothing intimidating about that at all...

But in that spirit of accountability, here they are! My Photography Goals for 2018...

1) Find a mentor. I see some inconsistencies with my portfolio that I'm coming up short resolving on my own. And coming from a business background, I have seen, read and felt the positive outcomes of working with someone who is where you want to be. So enlisting a photography mentor to help with my other goals is priority numero uno.

2) Apply to Click Pro. My photography journey began and continues with ClickinMoms, and since I posted my first photos for critique on the forum in December 2014, it has been my goal to be among the Click Pro crowd. Click Pro is "a modern network of highly skilled professional photographers and independent artists," and receiving that label comes with a lot of work and prep. A photographer submits a portfolio of 150 images to be reviewed by 3-5 judges who score her in six different categories. A score of 32 is needed for acceptance and for that sought after #clickpro hashtag. I plan to apply by Memorial Day. Hold me to it.

3) Learn video. My camera is awesome (Nikon D750) and it is my third child. We've been together for nearly two years, yet I haven't scratched the surface of everything it has to offer, including video. I dabble here and there, but in 2018 I'd really like to create some video content for my family and the families I photograph.

So that's the big three! (Shout out if you get that This Is Us reference). Cheers to a fun and productive 2018! Let's check in at the halfway mark in June, shall we?

Top Ten from 2017 | Sweet Wally Photography | Bowling Green KY Photographer

The end of another year is always a fantastic opportunity to review the work that's been done, to see how far you've come and how far you still need to go. Basically, that's photography in a nutshell. As soon as one thing is mastered, you realize there are 450 more things on the to learn list!

This past year, I can see improvement in my storytelling and compositions. I feel like my editing needs more consistency. I have a lot of ideas in the new year and I'm excited to get started.

But first, a look at my personal top ten photos from 2017. Can you tell black and white is one of my love languages?

While I'm proud of what was accomplished in the last year, I've got a list a mile long of things I want to work on in the new year. I'm sure that will be an upcoming post! What are hoping to work on in 2018?
